Filipino theater fans are in for a treat as the globally acclaimed musical Into the Woods takes center stage at the Samsung Performing Arts Theater in Circuit Makati this August 2025.

To be produced by Theatre Group Asia (TGA), the upcoming show aims to reimagine the beloved classic for the Philippine stage. Known for their high-caliber productions, TGA is poised to bring a fresh perspective to Into the Woods, staying true to its timeless appeal while adding a distinctly local flavor.
“Into the Woods,” with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and a book by James Lapine, intertwines the tales of iconic fairy tale characters such as Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, and Jack from “Jack and the Beanstalk.” Their narratives converge around a baker and his wife on a quest to lift a witch’s curse, exploring themes of desire, consequence, and the complexities of “happily ever after.”
Adding to its global acclaim, Into the Woods was adapted into a star-studded Disney film in 2014. Featuring an ensemble cast that included Meryl Streep, Anna Kendrick, Emily Blunt, Chris Pine, and James Corden, the movie brought the musical to a broader audience and while the film was praised for its strong performances and stunning visuals, it received mixed reviews from theater purists who compared it to the stage version’s raw, emotional depth.
With excitement building for this year’s run of Into the Woods, this isn’t the first time the musical has graced a Philippine stage. In 2015, Upstart Productions delighted audiences with a nature-inspired rendition at BGC’s Kalikasan Amphitheater.
Building on this legacy, TGA is generating excitement for its much-anticipated staging of the musical. While the cast remains unannounced, interest is steadily growing, thanks to the Philippine theater community’s reputation for talented performers and innovative productions.
