Fun, bloody, and a little unhinged. That is the kind of energy They Will Kill You brings to cinemas on March 25, and it is exactly what makes it such an easy, entertaining watch.
Directed by Kirill Sokolov and produced by Andy Muschietti, the film leans fully into its horror-action-comedy identity. Zazie Beetz leads the cast, joined by Tom Felton, Heather Graham, and Patricia Arquette, all stepping into a story that does not hold back on either chaos or creativity.
In a newly released featurette, Sokolov shares that the idea actually came from a real experience. Years ago, he and his wife moved into an apartment building where everyone seemed unusually close. It was the kind of place that made you wonder what was really going on behind closed doors. That uneasy feeling stuck with him, eventually spiraling into a darker idea. What if those neighbors were not just friendly, but part of something far more sinister?
That thought eventually became the world of The Virgil, the film’s central setting. It is where Beetz’s character finds herself trapped for one long night, trying to survive a cult that has turned the place into a twisted, deadly playground. The setup is simple, but what follows is anything but. The film mixes fast-paced action with horror and a sense of humor that keeps things from getting too heavy.
That balance is also what drew the cast in. Beetz has shared, in the same featurette, that she was drawn to how much fun Sokolov was clearly having with the genre. It shows in the way the film moves, never staying in one lane for too long. Felton also points out how unusual the script felt, pulling together elements like family dynamics and cult horror in a way that still feels fresh.
