A Global Call to Build Better Homes with Bamboo: BASE and Bamboo U Launch Bamboo Housing Challenge

MANILA, PHILIPPINES – BASE Bahay Foundation (BASE), a non-profit organization dedicated to sustainable building solutions, is proud to announce its role as co-organizer of the Bamboo Housing Challenge. This international design competition, launched in partnership with Bamboo U, a pioneer in bamboo training courses in Bali, and supported by the Hilti Foundation, invites architects, designers, engineers, students, and creative thinkers worldwide to reimagine affordable housing through the lens of bamboo innovation. The winning prototype will be built at full scale in Bali, Indonesia.

The Bamboo Housing Challenge asks a vital question: What if a home could be affordable, resilient, beautiful, and made entirely from one of the world’s most sustainable materials? This initiative seeks bold ideas for a bamboo-based home prototype that can be constructed for USD 10,000, offering a tangible solution for communities in urgent need of climate-responsive housing.

“At BASE, we firmly believe bamboo holds immense potential to revolutionize sustainable and affordable construction globally,” said Engr. Luis Felipe Lopez, General Manager of BASE. “This challenge is a direct embodiment of our mission to push the boundaries of bamboo construction, inviting the world’s brightest minds to contribute to solutions that are not only environmentally sound but also dignified and accessible for vulnerable communities. We are thrilled to partner with Bamboo U on this groundbreaking initiative, taking innovative concepts from paper to reality in Bali.”

The contest encourages designs that are: affordable and realistic: demonstrating innovative approaches to cost-effective construction; durable and adaptable: capable of withstanding diverse environmental conditions; environmentally responsible: maximizing bamboo’s sustainable benefits; rooted in human-centered living: prioritizing comfort, functionality, and community; and visually inspiring: showcasing the aesthetic potential of bamboo.

The winner will receive: flights and accommodation for one representative; free participation in the 11-day course (valued at USD 2,775); opportunity for up to two additional team members to join the course at no extra cost; and global recognition through a printed and digital publication featuring top entries.

BASE and Bamboo U invite all innovators passionate about sustainable design and social impact to be part of this movement. An idea could become the next bamboo home prototype, inspiring communities globally.

The final date of registration is on March 15, 2026, while the submission deadline is on April 17, 2026. The winner will be announced on May 15, 2026, and construction in Bali will happen on October 23-November 3, 2026.
