Oscar winner Troy Kotsur Explores a World Without Sound in new horror film, Primate

Paramount Pictures has released a new featurette for the upcoming horror-mystery Primate, featuring Academy Award winner Troy Kotsur. The film, which explores a terrifying tale of survival, is set to arrive in Philippine cinemas on January 21, 2026.

A New Perspective on Horror

Troy Kotsur, who made history as the first deaf male actor to win an Oscar for his role in CODA, leads the film as Adam, the patriarch of the Pinborough family. In the featurette, Kotsur reflects on his unique journey into the genre, noting that traditional horror often relies heavily on characters reacting to sounds. Through Primate, he brings audiences into his world without sound, offering a fresh take on cinematic tension.

Synopsis of ‘Primate’

The film follows the Pinborough family, whose lives are intertwined with a chimpanzee named Ben. Ben was originally brought into the home by Adam’s late wife, a linguistics professor who worked with the animal.

The horror begins when Adam goes away on a short work trip. What was meant to be a relaxing tropical vacation for his daughters and their friends quickly devolves into a primal struggle for survival.

Primate is produced by Walter Hamada, John Hodges, and Bradley Pilz, directed by Johannes Roberts (47 Meters Down), and presented by Paramount Pictures in association with Domain Entertainment and 18Hz Production.
