H.E.R. and Liza Soberano Star in DreamWorks’ First Filipino-Inspired Animated Film, Forgotten Island

Filipino culture takes the spotlight in Forgotten Island, an original animated feature from DreamWorks Animation that brings local folklore to an international audience.

At the center of the story are Jo and Raissa, voiced by Grammy and Academy Award-winning artist H.E.R. and actress Liza Soberano. Best friends since childhood, the two find themselves at a turning point as they prepare to go their separate ways after high school. What begins as a simple night of celebration takes an unexpected turn when they are transported to Nakali, a mysterious island populated by Filipino mythical creatures.

In Nakali, they encounter both allies and adversaries. Among them are Raww, a well-meaning weredog voiced by Dave Franco, and the feared Manananggal, voiced by Lea Salonga. As Jo and Raissa search for a way back home, they are faced with a difficult reality. Returning may come at a cost, as they risk losing the memories that define their friendship.

Directed by Joel Crawford and Januel Mercado, and produced by Mark Swift, the film continues the creative team’s work following Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.

The cast also features Jenny Slate, Manny Jacinto, Dolly de Leon, Jo Koy, and Ronny Chieng, bringing together a mix of global and Filipino talent.

Beyond its fantasy setting, Forgotten Island reflects on friendship, identity, and the moments that shape who we become. It offers a fresh perspective on Filipino storytelling in animation while staying grounded in a universal coming-of-age story.
